In mid-January 2018, Mr. Dietmar Gajdos, director of our Chamber of Commerce and Dr. Franco Merckling, the aspiring future president, were invited by the Hon. Carmelo Abela, the Maltese Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion and the Maltese non-resident Ambassador to Switzerland H.E. Saviour F. Borg for an exchange of views at the Hotel Bellevue Palace in Bern.

By the way, Mr Abela and Mr Borg had just concluded a meeting with the recently elected Swiss head of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ignazio Cassis.

In a pleasant atmosphere, the discussion centred around the promotion of trade and services between the two countries with the Chamber being promised support in their future activities both in Switzerland as well as in Malta, particularly in questions concerning the Maltese competent authorities. The minister also offered us a direct point of contact, something which we appreciate very much and could be of help in the future.

Also discussed were the possibilities of organising presentations in Malta with industry representatives as well as similar ones in Switzerland. This with the aim of approaching interested industry representatives, as well as attracting new members for the Chamber.

We also talked briefly about the proposed forthcoming change in the Presidency of the Chamber of Commerce which explained the reason for the presence of Dr. Franco Merckling.
