Valletta 2018 invites everyone to take part in an island-wide festa, or feast, that’s rooted ...

Over 400 events invite friends, families, creatives and curious visitors to discover, enjoy and create culture together, making the year 2018 a 360-degree exploration of contemporary Maltese and Gozitan life that’s set to unlock everyone’s imagination.

With diverse programme strands to explore – Community, Visual Arts & Design, Children & Young People, Performance, Film & Opera, Music, and City Highlights – Valletta 2018 holds something for everybody!

Diverse events and activities on the Valletta 2018 Cultural Programme will be unfolding in the capital city and various localities across the Islands, uniting the traditional vision of a Mediterranean life enriched by close ties to family, friends and neighbours with the islands’ growing creative practices.

March sees the launch of Valletta 2018’s major visual arts exhibition, Dal-Baħar Madwarha (The Island is What the Sea Surrounds), which sets the tone for newly commissioned and existing pieces that explore the idea of “islandness” in playful and critical ways. It’s an artistic journey through the contemporary realities of the Maltese Islands, placing at their helm the Islands’ relationship with their closest neighbour – the Mediterranean Sea.

In Summer, Valletta’s majestic Grand Harbour is set to host Valletta Pageant of the Seas, a programme teeming with exciting daytime activities, including visual demonstrations, water acts, and competitive races set between the two forts that dominate the harbour. After sundown, the atmosphere is transfigured thanks to a spectacular artistic display and light effects.

Diverse performances are bringing unique visions to Valletta 2018 throughout the year, immersing audiences and creatives in original and haunting worlds. Among these is one of the highlight events of the Valletta 2018 cultural programme, Orfeo & Majnun, a theatre of emotions about love, loss, and longing, and the power of music. It's an interdisciplinary, participatory music-theatre piece in two parts that invites local citizens to participate in creative workshops and presentations that connect the Greek myth of Orfeo & Eurydice and the Middle Eastern tale of Layla and Majnun into a poetic theatrical experience.

Valletta 2018 invites you to discover these events and more! Plan your very own year in culture by visiting www.valletta2018.org or by downloading the Valletta 2018 app.
